Dr. Thilagavathi Chandulal, Doctor and Tamil Laureate

Dr. Thilagavathi was educated at the Women’s Christian College (Chennai), the Christian Medical College (Vellore), the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (London, UK), the Wilfrid Laurier and the Brock (Canada). She taught at CMC, Vellore, worked for the poor in South India for 20 years, served in the Emirates among women including those with HIV-AIDS, was on boards of Tamil Associations, and taught OB-GY to the first batch of Medical students at the University of Oman. In Canada, she served the Tamil Refugees from Sri Lanka for five years (2001-’06) from her rented apartment at the St. James Town, Toronto, teaching them conversational English, Health, Nutrition, Avvaiyar, Bharathiyar etc, debates and dramas. At St. Catharines, she was on the Mayor’s Committee for “Community and Race Relations,” and won the “Distinguished Graduate Student Award of 2012” for MA in Philosophy.
